PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) continues to strengthen its position in the international market by realizing the export of urea fertilizer to Australia. A total of 47,250 tons of urea were successfully shipped and arrived at the Port of Brisbane, Queensland, as part of a strategic cooperation between Indonesia and Australia in the food security sector.

This shipment marks the initial phase of the urea export target of 250,000 tons by the end of 2026. This move also demonstrates Indonesia's capability to maintain fertilizer supply amidst global supply chain challenges still influenced by world geopolitical dynamics.

The arrival of the Motor Vessel (MV) Medi Luna carrying fertilizer from Indonesia also signifies the implementation of the fertilizer export cooperation through a Government-to-Government (G-to-G) scheme between the two countries.

Indonesia Strengthens Role in Regional Food Security

The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Australia and Vanuatu, Siswo Pramono, stated that the fertilizer shipment to Australia is proof of Indonesia's contribution to supporting food security in the Indo-Pacific region.

According to him, Indonesia holds a strategic position as one of the fertilizer producers capable of maintaining supply continuity when global distribution chains face various challenges.

“This cooperation is a symbol of the strong food security partnership between Indonesia and Australia. When global supply chains face challenges, Indonesia, with its large urea production capacity, can help meet Australia's needs, which reach 3.7 million tons per year,” said Siswo in his statement on Tuesday (23/6/2026).

In addition to strengthening bilateral relations, this cooperation is also expected to provide supply certainty for Australia's agricultural sector, which is highly dependent on fertilizer availability.

National Production Assessed Capable of Meeting Domestic and International Needs

The President Director of Pupuk Indonesia, Rahmad Pribadi, explained that the success of this export reflects the increasing competitiveness of the national fertilizer industry.

According to him, the company is capable of maintaining production and distribution sustainability, thus being able to meet the needs of domestic farmers while also serving the international market.

“Today, Indonesia shows that we are a reliable supplier that can be a source of fertilizer supply for partner countries. We come when they need it, and we provide certainty when the world is full of uncertainty,” said Rahmad.

Currently, Pupuk Indonesia has a production capacity of 14.8 million tons of fertilizer per year. Specifically for urea, production in 2026 is targeted to reach 7.8 million tons.

Meanwhile, domestic fertilizer demand is estimated to be around 6.3 million tons, leaving ample room to meet export needs without disrupting national supply.

“The President’s directive is, first, to fulfill the domestic fertilizer needs for our farmers. We have a capacity that is indeed larger than the needs of farmers in Indonesia,” said Rahmad.

Target Export of 250 Thousand Tons by End of 2026

Indonesia's ability to supply fertilizer to the international market is also supported by relatively safe domestic stock conditions.

As of June 22, 2026, subsidized fertilizer stock was recorded at 1.23 million tons. Meanwhile, the realization of subsidized fertilizer distribution has reached 4.61 million tons, an increase of approximately 30 percent compared to the same period in the previous year.

On the other hand, the Australian government welcomed the arrival of fertilizer from Indonesia positively.

Amanda Chalmers, Chief Digital & Data Officer (First Assistant Secretary) of the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, assessed that this shipment is a strong symbol of the strategic relationship between the two countries.

“The arrival of urea from Indonesia today reflects the close partnership and friendship between Australia and Indonesia. This fertilizer supply provides certainty for farmers, while also contributing to the food security of Australia and the wider region,” said Amanda.

This urea export is a follow-up to the cooperation agreement previously established between President Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The inaugural shipment was carried out using the MV Medi Luna, which departed from the BSL Pier of PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur in Bontang, East Kalimantan, in mid-May 2026. Subsequently, shipments will be made in stages until the total export target of 250,000 tons is reached by the end of 2026.
