Bahlil Lahadalia targets 3 kg CNG to begin production in July 2026 as a replacement for subsidized LPG. This program is being tested for households, focusing on safety and energy efficiency.

UPDATEYUK.ID - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia targets the production of 3-kilogram Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to commence in July 2026. This program is being prepared as an alternative to subsidized LPG, which has been widely used by the public.

This step is part of the government's effort to reduce Indonesia's dependence on LPG imports, while also maximizing the utilization of domestic natural gas reserves, which are considered substantial but not yet optimal.

3 Kg CNG Prepared as Alternative to Subsidized LPG

Bahlil explained that the development of 3 kg CNG cylinders is focused on household needs, so it can gradually replace subsidized LPG.

Currently, CNG is generally used for industrial needs in larger cylinders, such as 12 kg to 50 kg. However, the government is now developing a smaller version that can be directly used by the public.

“For subsidized recipients, they will continue to use the 3 kg cylinder. We are currently in the third phase of trials. Hopefully, by July it can be produced,” said Bahlil at the Energy Forum in Jakarta.

Trials Focus on Safety and Stove Adaptation

The government is currently conducting the third phase of trials for the use of 3 kg CNG for households. This phase focuses on safety aspects, considering that CNG pressure is much higher than LPG.

CNG pressure is known to reach 200–250 bar, so a special cylinder design and safety system are needed to ensure safe use by the public.

One of the innovations being prepared is the use of a safety valve system to regulate gas flow and reduce the risk of leaks or explosions.

In addition, the government ensures that the stoves currently used for 3 kg LPG do not need to be replaced, as the CNG system is designed to be compatible with existing household appliances.

Encouraging Reduction of LPG Imports and Optimization of Domestic Gas

The development of 3 kg CNG is considered a strategic step to reduce LPG imports, which have been burdening Indonesia's energy trade balance.

According to Bahlil, Indonesia has substantial natural gas reserves, but their utilization is still limited due to infrastructure and distribution technology constraints.

With the introduction of 3 kg CNG, the government hopes that the utilization of domestic gas will increase, while also providing a more efficient energy alternative for the public. (*)
